This blog is a list of websites for my design references, firstly though, it is important for me to say that I am not a very broad internet user, that is to say I use the internet all the time but only for the same few things.
Because of this I decided to use my top few more visited websites for my list of five, I figure they must be good if I continue to go back and use them.
My websites are:
ninemsn.com.au
aria.com.au
spotal.com.au
hotmail.com
youtube.com
> I also wanted to use Facebook.com because I use that site all the time, but they have updated it the other day and I’m not really sure how it looks anymore.
Anyway some of the seven key characteristics shared by most of my sites include:
1. The menu list horizontally across the top of the screen, I find this the easiest way to read a menu, as opposed to the list vertically on the page.
2. The search bar that they all have at the top of the screen, bar aria.com.au. This makes for quick and simple searching to get around the site.
3. The way that all the pages are very simple to look at, there isn’t any overpowering animations whizzing across the screen. Just text and images on plain backgrounds.
4. None of the pages have start up music or sounds when you first enter the page. I think this is a very good thing because I hate it when pages play sounds when you enter them and you then have to work out how to stop or pause the music/sounds.
5. I also like it how in when you are on the page and look at the address bar each page has its own little symbol on the left. This makes a page look very professional.
6. I think it is also a commonality that the pages all have reasonably easy page names and are easy to remember. I never have to go to google to find these pages as I can keep track of their addresses in my head.
7. All the pages except for Hotmail sit narrowly in my screen, so if i was using a bit of a lower resolution all the information would still fit.
This is a basic run down of the things that my sites have in common, I will include pictures of these sites in my next blog post to show some of these points.
